I am without internet for the next few weeks due to a new house, so instead of reviews (I have an 8 Eye Spy one in the works) or gig listings (look to the right and check the venue websites, or, better yet, sign up to Douban), I’m going to provide you with a link (Jake Newby) to a link (Discontent) to a mixtape from Shaun of Tenzenmen.
For those who aren’t familiar with Tenzenmen, they are a record label distribution company operating out of Sydney with a tendency to cover some more obscure records. A quick look at their website throws up a few rough gems: Scul Hazards, My Disco, Love Of Diagrams, and No Anchor, just to name a few Australian bands. Shaun is also a stand up guy who tirelessly dedicates himself to DIY music. Before moving to Beijing I got in touch with him and he provided me with as much information as he had on the music scene here.
So what’s the relevance? Well Tenzenmen distributes quite a lot of Chinese bands’ music, and this mixtape is dedicated to music solely from China. Unsurprisingly it’s named China: A Mixtape. I highly recommend giving it a listen, and having a look at Tenzemen’s website too.
